Kidney Transplant in India
Kidney transplantation involves surgically attaching a functioning kidney, or graft, from a brain-dead organ donor (a cadaver transplant) or from a living donor, to a patient with ESRD. Living donors may be related or unrelated to the patient, but a related donor has a better chance of having a kidney that is a stronger biological "match" for the patient. The surgical procedure to remove a kidney from a living donor is called
Kidney transplantation is performed on patients with chronic kidney failure, or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). ESRD occurs when a disease or disorder damages the kidneys so that they are no longer capable of adequately removing fluids and wastes from the body or of maintaining the proper level of certain kidney-regulated chemicals in the bloodstream. Without long-term dialysis or a kidney transplant, ESRD is fatal.
Patients with a history of heart disease, lung disease, cancer, or hepatitis may not be suitable candidates for being a recipient or donor for a kidney transplant.
Most Advanced Techniques for Kidney Donor Safety
Donor Nephrectomy
With the use of a video camera system via 1/2-inch incisions, a kidney can be surgically removed from a living donor. The surgery can be performed completely laparoscopically or hand assisted (use of a small incision to insert the hand into the abdominal cavity.
Using very small incisions, a special telescopic camera and specially designed instruments, the kidney is removed from the donor. The surgeon performs the surgery while looking at a TV monitor.
Advantages of Laparoscopic Vs Open Living Donor Nephrectomy
- Less pain Use of patient-controlled intravenous pain machine
- Shorter hospital length of stay
- Faster recovery time
- Quick Recovery & to return to work

Pre-Transplant
Pre-transplant evaluation of donor and recipient is done by a team of qualified and experienced professionals. Special attention is paid to donor evaluation to ensure that the donor is perfectly healthy at the time of donation and that he /she continues to remain normal after donation. The potential recipient undergoes evaluation, adequate dialysis and is brought to an optimal state to withstand the major surgery of renal transplant.
Post-Transplant
Following surgery the patient is taken to a specialised, isolated post -transplant unit where 1: 1 nursing care is provided to minimize the risk of cross- infection. Here the patient is closely monitored to ensure that the new organ is accepted by the body and to ensure optimum immunosuppressant medication. Most patients are discharged by the fifth day. Before their discharge they are counselled about their medications that they will need to take, precautions that they will need to take regarding diet, lifestyle changes and mandatory follow up.
Many people worry that donating a kidney will leave the donor in a dangerous situation. The living donor of the kidney is left with one healthy functioning kidney, which should be more than enough for the rest of the donor's life. His or her activities are not usually limited.
